So I’ve been using Leopard on my Mac Book Pro for a few weeks now. Up until a few days ago, I had absolutely no complaints; everything worked just as well if not better and you get that silly sense of improvement based solely on that point FIVE instead of point FOUR in the OS version. When I turned on my laptop on Sunday, however, I was confronted with what was, quite possibly, my first real “annoyance” with my laptop. My “Macintosh HD” was missing from the Desktop. I could still open Finder and all of my other, external drives, were present both on the Desktop and in Finder, but I had no means of, graphically, accessing the “Macintosh HD” contents (as far as the root of the volume is concerned). I could still access any of the areas that I had aliases to (and anything that was located in Finder under “Places.” I did some light searching and came across this article that was talking about the exact problem I was having. I don’t really know what caused it. It was working fine up until I shut down on Friday afternoon. I don’t recall any updates or anything; the last application I installed, I believe, was Office 2008… but that was well before Friday. I installed some AV updates on Thursday, but… well, whatever. Anyway, I started having the problem. Following the guidance of the aforementioned site, I used the command:
Brak:~ bitzer$ sudo chflags nohidden /
This resolved the issue, however, as in the case of the individuals who had previously complained of the problem, the drive would, again, disappear several minutes later. The trick, it seemed, was setting the volume to “Read Only” for all users and groups. This was all well and good and I’d moved on until I installed the 10.5.2 update yesterday. It, apparently, reset the volume permissions and so I was reminded of the problem this morning. Annoying shit.
Also, for only the second or third time that I can remember since I’ve lived in Kuwait, it hailed yesterday.
